SeaTak Coral Adhesive

Permanently bond coral fragments with mussel polymers

SeaTak is a completely new type of underwater adhesive, inspired by the chemistry of mussel byssus threads.
For centuries, humans have been impressed by the enormous adhesive force with which mussels can attach themselves to all surfaces. Science has now been able to mimic the chemical processes of this adhesive bond to create a durable, non-toxic, and easy-to-use adhesive based on mussel polymers. This development was specifically carried out to create an optimal and high-strength underwater adhesive for the restoration of coral reefs, and this product is perfect for gluing stony coral fragments in reef aquariums.

Instructions

The procedure depends largely on the specific application, such as fragmenting stony corals in the aquarium or for farming, i.e. gluing a fragment onto an artificial substrate, or directly gluing a coral fragment to a rock formation, either in the aquarium or in the natural habitat.
Another application would be the creation of a rock decoration, e.g. from live rock or reef ceramic or other artificial rock material, and this can be done dry or wet, i.e. underwater.

It is important to understand the adhesive, as it does not behave like cyanoacrylate or underwater epoxy.

The application technique differs significantly from conventional gluing processes. Therefore, it is advisable to do a test with a small amount of the adhesive before starting with live coral fragments in order to get to know the material behavior.
In principle, you should always work with protective gloves, not only to avoid skin contact, but also to facilitate cleaning afterwards.

Procedure for gluing:

Preparation

First, prepare the surfaces to be bonded, clean them and roughen them if necessary. The surfaces do not have to be dry.

Application

Apply the adhesive with a suitable tool such as a spatula, or press the material out of the tube at the point of use. This can be done dry or underwater. Do not use the material too sparingly, as a generous application is often necessary for sufficient stability.
Work quickly, as in a humid environment, the adhesive forms a skin on the material surface, which reduces the adhesiveness here.

Curing

Then let the adhesive cure: moisture is the activator, so it starts to cure immediately.
The material immediately resists a slight water flow in the aquarium. After just one day, around 50 to 80 percent of the final strength is achieved.

Afterwards,

After the work process, you should immediately start cleaning the workplace. Soiling by traces of uncured adhesive can be cleaned with acetone (nail polish remover) or 91% isopropanol (cleaning alcohol). Cured adhesive must be removed mechanically by grinding or crushing.
